Just when I’d really like to relax and forget about all those “rules of life” for a few days, it’s more important than ever to be vigilant when travelling. I’ve learned that many months of hard work can be undone in a week or two if I’m not careful. So, now when I travel I have a few useful tricks in my bag. Supportive travel companions help me make good choices. I plan ahead as much as I can, especially when travelling by plane or across several time zones. I carry healthy snacks with me in case there are delays and look for carry-on meals that suit my needs. In restaurants, a buffet is my best bet. There I can control portion sizes and select what’s best for me. I’m usually more active when I’m travelling so I don’t beat myself up for taking a week or so away from my regular exercise but I do look for easy ways to compensate. I try to take the stairs instead of the escalator in airports and I try to get in a nice walk every day. It’s much easier to get back to normal if I haven’t lost too much ground while I was away.
